As many of you already know, at Derma-act we offer a new procedure – ultrasonic liposuction Vaser Lipo. It is performed by Dr. Alexandros Lafchis, who has been part of our team since the beginning. Though we recently held a livestream where Dr. Lafchis and Dr. Pagidas answered your questions, due to the high interest, there was not enough time to answer them all. Therefore, as we plan a second livestream, we present to you an interview with Dr. Lafchis, compiled from your questions. From it you will learn everything you need to know about the Vaser Lipo procedure.
Dr. Lafchis, tell us a little about yourself.
I am a specialist in plastic and reconstructive surgery, with many years of experience. My interests and practice cover the entire spectrum of the specialty – reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, as well as treatment of burns and chronic wounds.
Does Vaser Lipohave a long lasting effect?
The result is long-lasting if the patient follows a normal diet.
Is Vaser Lipo effective and are there risks?
Every medical and especially surgical procedure poses risks. What patients should always demand is a detailed explanation of these risks, how often they occur, and what they would need to do to address them. Often in practice we have to schedule additional consultation appointments so that I can explain everything to the patients in detail, as well as for them to have time to think and ask any new questions if something is not clear to them.
Is the effect really visible after one procedure?
The effect after one procedure is drastic and a repeat intervention is very rarely required. Usually it is expressed in a small correction of possible minor irregularities.
What are the visible results of Vaser Lipo?
The visible results are a drastic removal of fat deposits in the treated areas, which achieves the desired figure.
How many areas can be worked on simultaneously with Vaser Lipo?
There is no limit to the number of areas and usually multiple areas are treated.
Are there any limitations/restrictions for performing the procedure?
Not every patient is suitable for this procedure. First of all, this is not a weight loss procedure, but a body shaping procedure. If you intend to lose weight dramatically and get rid of many extra kilos, then we will have to wait until you reach the desired number and your weight normalizes. The presence of a number of diseases and conditions can also be a contraindication for this procedure. So to this question I would answer that, although rare, there are limitations. This is one of the things we discuss during consultations before choosing and offering our patients the optimal procedures for them. The goal is to achieve the expected result, but with as few risks as possible for the patient.
Is there a difference in the amount of fat cells removed when applying ultrasound(Vaser Lipo) and the standard method of liposuction?
Yes. This is one of the huge advantages of Vaser Lipo. Scientific research shows that more than 80% of the fat cells that are removed using the ultrasound method remain alive. This does not happen with classic liposuction and is a very beneficial result because this material is a perfect autologous agent that can be transplanted to other areas, if the patient wishes, for example breasts, glutes or cheekbones.
Can the Vaser Lipo procedure be used for fat tissue transfer?
With Vaser Lipo, we can transfer large amounts of living fat cells and get very good results without having to introduce foreign bodies and synthetic materials into the patient’s body. It is this advantage of ultrasound liposuction that I mentioned in response to the previous question.
Is the procedure suitable for treating cellulite?
Vaser Lipo does not treat cellulite. The procedure can lead to some improvements, but for the treatment of cellulite there are many other methods that are the subject of dermatology. The problem of cellulite is one of the many examples that the combination between plastic surgery and dermatology gives optimal results.
Is Vaser Lipo suitable to be performed around only the knee area?
Yes, of course. The idea is to treat those areas where there are fatty deposits, to improve their look. If this is the only area causing the patient discomfort, only that area can be treated.
Is Vaser Lipo suitable for abdomen and thighs?
The procedure gives excellent results in these areas.
Is it only through surgical intervention that the so-called Foxy Eyes can be achieved?
There are both surgical and non-surgical methods to achieve Foxy Eyes. For young patients, of course, I would recommend the non-surgical methods.
What is the cost of the procedure?
The price of the procedure depends on the number of areas and how pronounced the problem is. If we have to provide a range, the prices start from 2500 and reach 5000 BGN.
Can Vaser Lipo be carried out on the belly in the presence of diastasis?
Diastasis is a defect in the abdominal wall that requires surgical correction. Such a condition should not be treated with liposuction because, in addition to the high risks, the aesthetic result will not be good. So diastasis is a contraindication for Vaser Lipo.
Is Vaser Lipo suitable for just tightening loose skin?
It depends on how pronounced the looseness is. For mild to moderate looseness- yes.
For more serious conditions – no.
What are the requirements for the patient before and after the procedure?
My requirements for all patients is that they are well informed about what lies ahead. In addition, they must strictly follow the instructions before and after the operation. In the specific procedure, it is important to do special massages postoperatively and to wear elastic underwear.
Is a stay at the clinic required before or after Vaser Lipo?
For more extensive procedures, patients may need to stay overnight for observation at the clinic after Vaser Lipo is performed. In smaller interventions, patients are discharged after a few hours.
Is Vaser Lipo a good option after giving birth?
It can be carried out after giving birth as long as at least 1 year has passed and the patient is not breastfeeding.
What is the recovery period after Vaser Lipo?
The recovery period also depends on the volume of the surgical intervention. If we treat a small area, for example the chin, the recovery is very fast, within a few days. If the area is larger, it usually takes between 7 and 14 days. I always advise patients to plan their professional and personal commitments so that they have 14 days for a full recovery.
